DESCRIPTION:Come and marvel at a gorgeous display of our Cup-winning orchids! \nThe orchids offered in supermarkets and garden centres are a tiny sample of the tens of thousands of known species and hybrids. Our Show is an opportunity to enjoy a greater variety of their exotic forms\, colours and fragrances. \nThe full programme is to be confirmed\, but as well as our Society stand\, we expect the following: \n\nIt’s not just the Suffolk Orchid Society who will be exhibiting – our friends from the Orchid Society of East Anglia will be coming down from Norwich to set up a display of their orchids too!\nOrchids in flower and suitable for windowsill culture will be on sale from visiting nurserymen – handy for Mothering Sunday the following day!\nSociety members will give repotting demonstrations and be available to advise on orchid culture.\nWe’ll be running a Tombola.\nDavid Mittell will be offering for sale his wooden baskets and other carved accessories.\nWe’ll have a stand offering for sale Guy William Eves’ botanical drawings (see https://www.guywilliameves.co.uk/).\nRefreshments\, including light lunches\, will be available at moderate cost.\n\nAdmission is £2.00. The Society can’t take card payments at the moment\, so cash only please. \nLast year\, the Show was very busy in the morning but less so in the afternoon – so consider coming after 1pm if that is convenient for you.

DESCRIPTION:Colin Thorburn (President of the Orchid Society of East Anglia) will be visiting to tell us about the 23rd World Orchid Conference. \nWe are experimenting with a change to our Display Tables\, as the division between the main display table\, the ‘Winners’ table and the ‘Novices’ table hasn’t been working very well for a while.  For this and subsequent meetings\, we will have a main display table showing anyone’s orchids (as we have always had)\, a ‘novice and window-sill’ display table and a separate competition table for any orchid to be entered. Therefore\, if at any time any member has a ‘novice or window-sill’ orchid they think is good enough to put onto the competition table\, they can do so. Then if at the end of the year they are the winner of the cup for the competition table\, they become a ‘winner’\, otherwise they can continue to display their\norchids on the ‘novice and window-sill’ table. If this doesn’t work out\, we’ll think again! \nNB Annual subscriptions are due and remain unchanged at £10. \nDoor open about 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

DESCRIPTION:Andrew Bannister\, proprietor of Orchid Alchemy\, will be visiting us on 25-Oct-23 to give a talk entitled ‘Tropical Orchids Without Heat’.  No doubt he will also bring a selection of his stock for sale – I certainly hope so\, as I’ve had seedlings from him in the past that have grown into truly magnificent plants. \nArrive after 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

DESCRIPTION:At our May meeting\, we’ll be showing a recorded talk by Fred Clarke on Catasetums.  This fascinating genus of orchids produces male or female flowers depending on the light level; the showy male flowers arise if you cultivate in lower light\, the green but intricate female flowers if you cultivate in brighter light.
