Pterostylis curta is an unusual Australian terrestrial orchid, exhibited by Bill Haldane, that won the expert section. These spring flowering orchids require a warmer, drier summer rest. They multiply quickly into large clumps and can be separated before growth starts in autumn when water is gradually increased. Fertilize with weak feed when in growth and put in a cool, bright position-a cool windowsill is fine. After flowering reduce water and put the dormant tubers somewhere warmer and in shade but not too dry until early autumn when growth resumes.
The novice table resulted in a tie between Pauline Wright’s paphiopedilum hybrid and Enid Castle’s graceful cymbidium hybrid. Both growers succeed in growing great quality plants using windowsill cultural techniques.
