Colin Thorburn (President of the Orchid Society of East Anglia) was our guest at our September 2024 meeting and gave a talk on the 23rd World Orchid Conference. This triennial event took place in Taiwan and lasted 16 days – from 24-Feb-24 to 10-Mar-24. It was spread across two venues – the International Convention Centre, Tainan, and the Taiwan Orchid Technology Park, and was held concurrently with the 20th Taiwan International Orchid Show. The whole thing was on a massive scale, with a packed timetable of symposia including presentations by the UK’s Mathers Foundation and (on Disas) by Mike Tibbs. Colin was part of the judging team, helping to assess many categories of orchid including 18 classes just of Phalaenopsis. His photos included some of the most spectacular prize-winners.
We also received news of our Society members’ successes in the BOC Photo Competition 2024 (see separate post).
The salvers were awarded for most wins of the Winners and Novices tables in the Sep-23 to Jun-24 Society year; Bill Gardiner won the Winners salver and Phil Broom won the Novices salver.
For reasons I’ve been unable to establish, the planned rejig of our Display and Competition tables did not take place, so the arrangement of the display tables was unchanged. David Mittell won the Novices table with his Phalaenopsis hybrid, and Bill Gardiner won the Winners Table with his Dendrobium Hibiki.
